How to Create Fun Pumpkin STEM Projects for Kids

Fall is here, and what better way to celebrate than by diving into pumpkin-themed activities. These STEM activities are fun and packed with educational value.

Whether you’re at home or in a classroom, these engaging projects are perfect for kids and preschoolers, combining science, technology, engineering, math, and art. As you go through each activity, remember safety first!

Supervision is key, particularly with the younger ones, and always keep those safety goggles handy for experiments!

Pumpkin Volcanoes Experiment

Materials Needed: Small pumpkin, small plastic cup, baking soda, vinegar, dish soap, food coloring (optional), tray.

Steps:

  • Cut the top off the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds.
  • Add a few drops of dish soap and food coloring to the plastic cup.
  • Put 2 tablespoons of baking soda inside.
  • Pour about half a cup of vinegar into the plastic cup and watch the eruption!

Safety: Wear safety goggles to protect eyes from splashes. Adult supervision required.

Pumpkin Seed Counting

Materials Needed: Pumpkin seeds, paper plates, markers.

Steps:

  • Clean and dry the pumpkin seeds.
  • Spread them on a paper plate.
  • Encourage your child to count the seeds in groups of 5 or 10.

Safety: Monitor small children to prevent seeds from being eaten.

Sink or Float

Materials Needed: A large bucket filled with water and various sizes of pumpkins.

Steps:

  • Have kids predict whether each pumpkin will sink or float.

Pumpkin Slime

Materials Needed: Clear glue, water, liquid starch, pumpkin seeds, orange food coloring.
